Ames Parks and Recreation

Ames Parks and Recreation boasts an expansive system of 37 parks and many recreation programs for young and old alike. Sports leagues and fitness classes are available for all ages. The Parks and Rec department also has several opportunities for swimming, including a wading pool, an aquatic center, and a municipal pool. There are 55 miles of bike trails running through Ames. Popular trails in the area include the High Trestle trail and the Ada Hayden trail. The High Trestle trail lies in the path of a former Union Pacific railroad track and includes a 13-story bridge overlooking the scenic Des Moines River. The Ada Hayden trail circles Ada Hayden Lake, providing a quiet and serene environment.

Hilton Coliseum and Stephens Auditorium

Hilton Coliseum is a multi-purpose arena home to Iowa State University basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and gymnastics. Along with sporting events, Hilton hosts events ranging from musical concerts to career fairs to graduation ceremonies. Stephens Auditorium was named Building of the Century by the American Institute of Architects in 2004. It hosts orchestras, plays, comedy shows, and more.

Reiman Gardens and Brunnier Art Museum

Located just south of Iowa State University’s football stadium, Reiman Gardens is one of the largest public gardens in Iowa. It incorporates sustainable designs, plants, and gardening practices. Reiman Gardens holds beautiful indoor and outdoor areas along with an indoor conservatory and a large butterfly wing. The Brunnier Art Museum is a point of pride for Ames and the Iowa State Center. An accredited museum, filled with a collection of beautiful sculptures and paintings with a distinct Midwestern touch, Brunnier emphasizes a decorative arts collection.

Grocery and Farmers’ Market

Ames features grocery stores for all tastes. Along with large chain stores, there are several specialty stores including organic food stores, cooperatives, and international food stores. Ames offers British, Indian, Korean, Middle Eastern, and Pakistani grocery stores. Local fruits, vegetables, dairy, breads, and more are also available at either of Ames’s two distinct farmers’ markets.

Thanks to the ethnic diversity brought in by Iowa State University students, Ames offers a wide variety of cuisines. Restaurants range from Irish, Korean, Middle Eastern, Chinese, British, Indian, Brazilian, Japanese and more. There are also a great deal of cafes in Ames, offering a quick pick-me-up and a cozy atmosphere.
